"It's rare to meet someone who's a natural in more than one creative area"- Adrian Breakspear, ARIA Award Winning Producer / Gang of Youths
If Jim Morrison and Stevie Nicks ever had a love child, enter stage left, multi-instrumentalist singer/songwriter & visual artist, Morgan Joanel, who returns to the music scene with her new single ‘Buy A Little Time’. Mixing up a soulful cocktail of melodies and colours, Morgan weaves clever live looping skills and evocative imagery into a captivating performance that unfolds not only live on stage, but long after you leave the show.
Layering husky vocal harmonies, Morgan’s sultry style bends around pulsing beats with the soul of blues. Her intriguing approach to making music live on stage has seen an eclectic mix of US and UK superstars handpick her to warm up their crowds when touring around Australia. Most recently in April 2019, Morgan was playing an intimate gig in Perth when UK music sensation Anne-Marie found her live-looping sound irresistible and personally invited her to open her headline show the following night.
In June 2019, Morgan wowed the crowd at HBF Park as the featured performer in an internationally televised pre-game entertainment show for Rapid Rugby, something the seasoned performer took in her stride. No stranger to playing big venues alongside international superstars, Morgan Joanel's eclectic mix of genre bending sounds and captivating live performances have earned her national tour support slots with international superstars such as Newton Faulkner, Adam Lambert, Jason Derulo and Jeff Martin (Tea Party).
After landing a major label record deal in her early 20’s, relocating to the other side of the country, running her own fashion label, and designing customised mandala artworks; her visions for music and art were suffocating with the restraints of being on a major - so she decided to walk away from it all, in search of artistic freedom.
“It was definitely a really weird time of these crazy highs and lows and then realising that if something doesn’t feel right, you have to go with your gut and say no, even if that means you have to start all over again - on your own, in a whole new way.”
And starting over in a new way is exactly what she has done since returning to Perth for a short break, that unexpectedly turned into the most creatively satisfying experience she’s ever had. Morgan has spent years travelling between the US and Australia working with Grammy nominated producers and songwriters but she accredits her total rebirth in music expression to being back home in Perth; “it has given me the space to create with total freedom” says the artist. Teaming up with ARIA Award winning producer Adrian Breakspear (Gang of Youths) and Dave Parkin (Tired Lion, Abbe May), the first independent release from Morgan is rattled with a raw, soulful edge that tangles stirring harmonies and intriguing production.
Having been both an independent and major label artist, Morgan is now creating something entirely new; an interactive approach, going direct to her fans. Her upcoming 5 track EP, which includes the new single Buy a Little Time, will be accompanied by an art exhibition and visuals to expand on the music. This concept of #artmusic will be released independently in 2019 thanks to her enthusiastic supporters who recently funded a $12k Kickstarter to bring the concept to life.
During her time exploring other creative expressions, the multi-disciplined artist produced an extensive list of fashion design successes including having her original collections stocked in Myer stores Australia wide and her face emblazoned on t-shirts in Zara stores globally. She’s been featured in Nylon Magazine (Japan), opened a Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Runway show and was labelled ‘genius’ by MTV Style (New York).
Although Morgan is constantly challenging her expression with new artistic mediums, it has always been music that brings her heart to life. Coming full circle, Morgan’s new project is an exploration of how music relates to imagery and story-telling, and takes its first breath with the independent release of lead single, Buy a Little Time, accompanied with visual artworks to expand on the music.
As she brings together the visuals for this current project, Morgan will continue to collaborate with other artists and venues to paint large scale murals and commissioned artworks, all of which can be seen in more details by exploring the Art links at morganjoanel.com
Morgan has been playing with loop pedals since 2007, where she began with acoustic guitar and simple percussion. She has since expanded her dynamic live performances around electric guitar, live beats and an array of effects with her RC-300 Loop station, Helix Effects Pedal, Voice Live Touch and iRig sample pad to suit the different venues and vibes she is playing. But in the end, it's her raw story telling as she wears her heart on her sleeve, that tends to create the connection and draw an audience in.
